Federal judge surveys San Quentin death chamber

The federal judge who halted executions in California five years ago viewed a new lethal injection facility at San Quentin Tuesday. KPCC’s Julie Small was one a handful of reporters allowed on the judge’s tour. The tour was an evidence gathering hearing so the judge can decide whether to lift the moratorium on executions.

U.S. District Court Judge Jeremy Fogel, prison officials and attorneys for inmates and the state, and the media took about an hour to inspect the new execution facility at San Quentin. Fogel spent the most time in the “infusion room” where staff prepares and administers the lethal injection drugs.  More...
