Ohio considers charging inmates for electricity

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio inmates paying their debt to society also would have to pay $1 per month for electricity and give up flavored drinks, under a state prisons budget plan.

The Columbus Dispatch reports the changes are among moneysaving ideas proposed this week to save the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction $30 million. Making water the only beverage with inmate lunches and dinners would cut $1 million. Another $3 million would be saved by offering meals with less variety but more of the most popular and least expensive foods.  More...
