A woman who was sexually assaulted in the Allegheny County Jail and said she was later beaten as she prepared to testify against her assailant filed suit Thursday, continuing a string of accusations against the jail that critics said reflects a disregard for human rights.
The incident described in the lawsuit reflects "very real human rights violations of sexual violence that women and, we feel, transgender people are subjected to at the Allegheny County Jail," said La'Tasha Mayes, executive director of New Voices Pittsburgh, which has launched a campaign to improve conditions in the lockup.
