FRESNO -- Officials at Avenal State Prison say they may never know what sparked a riot involving 50 inmates, including one who had to be airlifted for treatment of cuts on his face and head.
Lt. Edward Borla says the melee on Tuesday evening began in a single housing wing but spread to two other wings. Correctional officers quickly quelled the disturbance.
Borla says that prison fights are difficult to investigate because inmates are unlikely to cooperate with authorities. He says that all of those involved will face disciplinary hearings. More
