Cameron Defends Tough Jail Terms for Rioters

LONDON — Prime Minister David Cameron on Wednesday defended harsh prison terms for the riots that convulsed Britain this month, praising the magistrates who mete them out just one day after two young men were given four-year jail terms for inciting others to riot via Facebook.

The prime minister’s comments, during a visit to northwest England, played into a sharpening debate that has pitted government officials against lawyers and rights advocates arguing that, in the words of a prominent barrister, John Cooper, courts are under pressure from politicians to appease “angry Britain.”  More  PrisonerPal.com   True Crime Today  Magazine Subscriptions for Prisoners since 1975
